A message from the Archivist of Ontario

Angela Forest, Archivist of Ontario (A)

The Archives of Ontario is the premier source of information about the provinces history. And starting in February 2011, visiting us in person got easier. We extended our hours of operation in response to public demand, launching evening hours on Tuesday and Thursday as well as Saturday hours to better meet our customers needs.

We have also completed the re-processing of the J. C. B. and E. C. Horwood Collection, one of our flagship architectural collections. Descriptions and folder listings of all records series are now available online through our Archives Descriptive Database, making them much more accessible to researchers.

Our social media initiatives are gaining popularity, with our Twitter feed keeping over 700 followers and counting in touch with our activities.

We are continuing to engage Ontarios students with online and onsite programming. This May, Archives staff participated in our first-ever roadshow, bringing hands-on, curriculum-linked programming to nearly 400 students as part of our longstanding partnership with the Ontario Heritage Fairs Association. The roadshow travelled to regional heritage fairs in St. Catharines, Sudbury, Kingston and Toronto.

Sharing our collections with new audiences continues to be a top priority. In spring 2012, we will be launching our Ontario Society of Artists exhibit in our gallery, featuring the 39 contemporary artworks donated by OSA members to the Government of Ontario Art Collection in 2007. We will also be a strong presence during the War of 1812 bicentenary, delivering an exciting series of events, exhibits and educational programs that highlight our records and enlighten the public about this crucial time in our history.
