Staff Lawyers

Ava Arbuck, Manager of Outreach and Counselling, Staff Lawyer, is a lawyer in Toronto. Ms. Arbuck was called to the Ontario Bar in 1995 after completing her articles at the Crown Law Office - Criminal. She has a LL.B. from Osgoode Hall and a M.A. in English Literature from McGill University. In addition to representing clients in criminal trials and appeals, Ms. Arbuck has worked as a Prosecutions Liaison at the College of Nurses of Ontario.



Jonathan Shime was called to the Bar in 2002 and is currently an associate with Cooper, Sandler & West. He represents clients before the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Superior and Ontario Courts of Justice, including bail hearings, trials and appeals under the Criminal Code, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A.) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. His trial work includes applications on behalf of clients pursuant to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Jonathan has a particular interest in representing young persons charged under the Y.C.J.A. and has several reported decisions in that area. Jonathan has also acted as a moderator and panelist at conferences on effective advocacy for persons charged under the Y.C.J.A and drinking and driving offences. He has been appointed as amicus counsel by the Superior Court of Justice to assist in the defence of an unrepresented accused. In addition to his defence work, Jonathan prosecutes on a per diem basis on behalf of the Ministry of the Attorney General.



Robyn Trask, Staff Lawyer, is an associate with the law firm Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP. She completed her articles with the Canadian Autoworkers Union and was called to the bar in 2005. Ms. Trask acted as co-counsel to the Ontario Provincial Police Association at the Ipperwash Inquiry. She recently returned to Toronto after working with the Ethiopian Women's Lawyers Association in Addis Abada, Ethiopia for six months.



Maryth Yachnin, Staff Lawyer, is an associate with the law firm Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP. She has a B.A. in Politics from Queen's University and a J.D. from the University of Toronto. After articling at Paliare Roland, Ms. Yachnin was called to the bar in 2005 and worked as a Staff Lawyer at two legal aid clinics serving injured workers. She has also worked for the Cornwall Public Inquiry.



Sara Westreich, Staff Lawyer, joined the Inquiry from the Ministry of the Attorney General. Upon receiving her LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School, Ms. Westreich completed her articles as a judicial law clerk for the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2007. Ms. Westreich holds bachelor's degrees in English Literature and Education.



Tina Lie, Staff Lawyer, is an associate with the law firm Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP. She was called to the bar in 2007 after clerking for the Justices of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. She has a B. Arts Sc. from McMaster University, and a B.C.L. and a LL.B. from McGill University. Ms. Lie is also a member of the New York State bar.
