Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Community Forum, September 8 and 9, 2005

On September 8 and 9 2005, the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation hosted a community forum at Cape Croker. The purpose of the forum was for community members to discuss two issues: the struggle for the recognition of their fishing rights and responsibilities, and the protection of Aboriginal burial and other sacred sites. The Ipperwash Inquiry Commissioner and some Inquiry staff attended the forum to learn more about these important issues.

The Chippewas of Nawash is a party to Part Two of the Inquiry. They applied for and were granted funding to write a report and host a two-day community forum, as well as to write a paper about anti-Aboriginal racism.

The Chippewas of Nawash produced a report for the community forum entitled "Under Siege: How the People of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Asserted Their Rights and Claims and Dealt with the Backlash." This report is posted on the Inquiry's web site.
