Indian Territory

Area set up by the British government in 1763, in which new white settlement was prohibited. It originally comprised the Great Lakes area and the region between the Alleghenies and the Mississippi. Lands from this area, north of the Ohio River, were added to the Province of Quebec in 1774. What remained of the Indian Territory became part of the United States in 1783.
