Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons (1639-1649)

Headquarters of the Jesuit missions to the Hurons (1639-1649), located in Huron County. It was comprised of a fortified compound for French missionaries, lay assistants and soldiers, and a walled village for converted Hurons. It was abandoned in 1649 during the Iroquois offensive on Huronia. The mission was rebuilt by the Government of Ontario in the 1960’s.
