111. RG 16 Agriculture and Food.
980 linear feet.
BACKGROUND.
In the years following the War of 1812, Christian missionaries
and government officials tried to persuade the Indigenous
population of what is now Ontario to take up agriculture
on the European model. Though some more northerly groups,
such as the Ojibwa of Parry Island in Georgian Bay, did
adapt to this style of agriculture, the most successful
Aboriginal farmers were people like the Six Nations Iroquois,
who had been raising such crops as corn, beans and squash
for centuries before the Europeans arrived.
