RG 29 Community and Social Services
1876- (Predominantly 1930- ). - 1623 linear feet.
BACKGROUND.
The provision of social services to Aboriginal people in
Ontario is a matter of shared jurisdiction. Though the federal
government is constitutionally responsible for "Indians
and Indian lands", status Native people are subject
to provincial laws of general application. This category
includes such statutes as the provincial General Welfare
Assistance Act and the Child Welfare Act. Particularly over
the past two decades, Ontario has become increasingly involved
in aboriginal communities. Métis and non-status people,
of course, have always been eligible for provincial social
programs.
