A message from the Archivist of Ontario
The doors to our public service facility on York
University's Keele campus are open, and the Archives of
Ontario has entered an exciting new phase. We now have a
purpose-built home that is fully equipped to preserve
and showcase our onsite collections, provide service
improvements, and increase customer access.
A transition of this scope required dedication and
expertise across the organization. Time and again,
Archives staff proved to be up to the challenges this
complex move presented. From planning to execution,
staff worked incredibly hard, and I want to commend
everyone for their successful efforts.
Our state of the art building is designed to maximize
the customer experience. The much larger reading room
features additional audio-visual booths, computer
stations, and microfilm readers for researchers. The
classroom space facilitates innovative educational
programming and creates new partnership opportunities.
And the exhibit gallery allows us to display original
records for the very first time. Stay tuned for news
about the upcoming launch of our inaugural exhibit, On
the Map, which focuses on our extensive map collection
depicting the land now known as Ontario. Over 40
original maps have been selected for display.
I'm pleased to announce that we have enhanced the
structure and function of the website to coincide with
the move. I think you'll agree that the site has a
cleaner, more contemporary look, is easier to navigate,
and allows for more streamlined access to the
information that customers require.
Online and on location, we are committed to superior
service delivery. The building's capabilities serve to
strengthen our role as guardian of the provinces
documentary memory. I encourage you to visit the
facility and take part in this landmark chapter of the
Archives of Ontarios history.
