Innovation in Bringing Our Past Alive

The Archives of Ontario is committed to providing customer-focused, high quality and cost-effective services to our customers. Over the last three years, we have continued to modernize our operations to provide our customers with the services they need.

We will continue our initiatives to bring our past alive in classrooms by establishing priorities and developing new resources.

We will look to reach ever-broadening audiences through innovative partnerships and as we prepare for our move in 2009, we will be developing a programming strategy which reflects the enhanced opportunities provided by our new facility.

Leadership in Promoting Excellence in Government Recordkeeping

The Archives of Ontario provides leadership to promote and facilitate good recordkeeping by ministries and public bodies. Over the next three years, we will support ministries and public bodies as they implement the new Archives and Recordkeeping Act, 2006 by providing advice and expertise; developing guidelines, systems and tools; and identifying and addressing training needs.

Another key priority for the Archives over the next three years is to work with our partners within government to develop government-wide standards for electronic recordkeeping. In order to ensure that records are preserved for future Archives users, it is essential that standards, policies, and processes for the creation and management of electronic records are developed and communicated throughout the government of Ontario.

We will :

  • Provide leadership to assist ministries and public bodies to implement the Archives and Recordkeeping Act, 2006.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to assist ministries and agencies to manage their records more effectively.
  • Work with ministries and agencies to develop a training program to support the development of records management expertise throughout government.
  • Implement efficient and effective processes for updating records schedules which streamline the approvals process.
  • Work with our partners to develop government-wide standards and best practices for electronic recordkeeping.

Excellence in Custodial Strategies and Practices

The Archives has made significant changes over the last several years which have allowed us to strengthen the physical and intellectual control of our collections. Over the next three years, our priority will be to develop and implement strategies to ensure that our collections will be safely moved to our new facility in 2009. We are undertaking a complete survey of all of our holdings and will continue our preservation initiatives to prepare our collections for the move.

We will focus our acquisition activities on acquiring records that reflect the full diversity of Ontario and Ontarians. In order to ensure that archival records will be maintained for future generations of Archives users, we will also focus on developing the capacity and capability to effectively manage electronic archives.

We will continue to modernize our acquisition and description processes and to build capacity within the Archives, particularly in electronic records management and appraisal.

We will :

  • Develop a comprehensive plan for the safe and efficient transfer of our holdings to our new facility.
  • Complete a full survey of our collections to identify risks and prioritize preservation requirements.
  • Make more records available to our customers by continuing our focus on records description.
  • Give priority to the acquisition of records that reflect the diversity of Ontario and Ontarians by identifying gaps in our collections and seeking partnership opportunities.
  • Improve the Archives’ capacity to acquire and manage electronic records.
