| During 1788-1850, southern
Ontario was divided into Districts, each having a Court
of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace presided
over by local justices of the peace. These Courts were held
four times per year "to hear and determine all matters
relative to the Conservation of the Peace...". Besides
dealing with minor criminal charges, these Courts were also
responsible for District administration, including:
- appointing the District Treasurer and Surveyor
- maintaining District finances
- overseeing the establishment and collection of local
assessments
- ordering the construction of local roads and bridges
- granting of tavern, shop and still licenses
- building a proper courthouse and goal for the District.
Thus prior to 1841, these courts fulfilled both an administrative
and a judicial function. After 1841, responsibility
for district administration was transferred to the District
Councils. Of particular interest to genealogists are numerous
lists of minor officials, government contractors, petty
offenders, and taxpayers.
Only a fraction of the surviving General Quarter Sessions
of the Peace records have been microfilmed. The following
records are available on Interloan:

Midland District Court Of General Quarter Sessions Of
The Peace
Courthouse at Kingston, Frontenac County.
Minutes, 1800-1849. (Series RG 22-54)
This microfilm consists of minute books containing information
relating primarily to the judicial functions of Sessions.
There is some information regarding accounts, constables
(until 1832), ferry fees, assessments and gaol and courthouse
construction. It would appear that information relating
to taverns, assessments and other administrative functions
of Sessions was recorded in the Minutes (Adjourned Sessions).

Bathurst District/ Lanark Court Of General Quarter Sessions
Of The Peace
Courthouse at Perth, Lanark County
Minutes, 1823-1896. (Series RG 22-75)
This microfilm consists of two minutebooks. The pre-1841
minutes contain (apart from criminal business), orders
of Sessions regarding roads, accounts, appointments, and,
divisions of the Courts of Requests, and presentments
of the Grand Jury. What is not available in these minutebooks
are lists of tavern licenses. Certificates for tavern
licenses were issued in the Adjourned Sessions during
January of each year. These Sessions are not included
in the minutebooks. The only exception is the first
entry in the first minutebook which lists tavern keepers.
Although undated, this list probably concerns tavern keepers
for 1823. The second volume (1847-1896) includes
Returns of Convictions by local Justices of the Peace.
