How to Order Microfilm/Microfiche


Information for Patrons/Researchers:

The Archives' Microfilm Interloan Service does not lend microfilm/microfiche directly to patrons/researchers and is not able to conduct research on researchers' behalf. Direct requests from individuals will not be accepted. The Archives of Ontario does not charge for its Interloan service. Please ask at your local library/institution about their interlibrary loan policies.

  1. Search the Microfilm Interloan Catalogue to identify the reels of microfilm or fiche that you would like to order.
  2. Note the reference code and a brief description of the records.

    The reference code should consist of:

    • "GS 1", "GS 2", "MS", "FS", "B" or "N" fiche, microfilm group code
    • a microfilm reel number/or fiche number
    • a brief description of the records on the reel

    Examples:

    • GS 2, Reel 1246, Court Records, Frontenac Surrogate Court, Estate Files #2261 to #2349
    • MS 937, Reel 10, Vital Statistics, Indexes to Deaths, 1922
    • B 34, Reel 3, Historical Atlases, Atlas of the County of Middlesex, 1878
    • B 70, Reel 1, City of Toronto Directories
    • FS 001, Ontario Land Record Index
      • If you are requesting by Township, FS 001, please enter "1T" in the reel # field
      • If you are requesting by Name, FS 001, please enter "1N" in the reel # field
    • For prompt results please follow the above instructions precisely when typing your request in the required fields.
  3. Submit your request for the microfilm reels/microfiche through a library, archives or other institution that uses the interlibrary loan system.

    NOTE:

    • The loan period is 4 weeks for Canada, 5 weeks for the US, and 6 weeks for the rest of the world.
    • Microfilm/fiche must remain within the borrowing institution during the loan period.
    • Researchers may make copies for their own research purposes only. If the material is being published or distributed, written copyright permission must first be acquired from the Archives of Ontario. You may wish to consult Customer Service Guide 108: Copyright and Your Research.

Information for Libraries and Borrowing Institutions:

Institutions can submit interlibrary loan requests to the Archives of Ontario Microfilm Interloan Service in a number of ways:

  • Use AMIS our online service. This system allows institutions to submit, cancel, renew and track lending requests.
  • For Southern Ontario Library Service or Ontario Library Service - North users may continue to submit requests through the VDX system. Please follow procedures on how to send request to the Archives of Ontario (OTAR) using VDX request form.
