'Map of the North-West Territory of the Province of Canada,’ by David Thompson (1770-1857), is one of the largest items in the Archives’ collection and certainly among the most admired. Completed by Thompson in 1814, it is permanently on display in its own special climate-controlled case.

Although he had limited tools the map was so accurate that it remained the best plan of the region for one hundred years. In 1905 the Archives acquired Thompson’s masterpiece, along with many of his journals, from the Department of Crown Lands.
