The majority of the records in the collections of the Archives were created by the government of Ontario and its predecessors in the fulfilment of its legal and administrative functions. Land records, court records and registrations of births, marriages and deaths comprise a large percentage of the documents in the Archives' holdings.

But there are also many records of a visual nature from government agencies, private companies and individuals including approximately 1,700,000 photographs, 190,000 architectural drawings, over 30,000 maps, and over 4000 documentary art pieces. Of these, there are currently over 10,000 images available for download from the Archives Visual Database. Collected here is a sampling of images from the Archives vast holdings.
