Lesson Plan: The War of 1812: Loyalty and Treason In Upper Canada

Purpose

For students to gain a better understanding of the political and social climate during the War of 1812 in Upper Canada, specifically focusing on the Government’s attempt to prevent and punish deserters, and to put on trial and punish those who actively aided the American cause during the War of 1812.

Strand: Canadian History, Identity and Culture

Students will examine primary source material including: government documents, newspaper articles, and letters, which describe the legislation and punishment for those who left Canada and for those who aided American troops. Students will use a number of skills, including interpretation and analysis, critical thinking, research, and communication to examine the War of 1812 and the long term effects it had on the economic, social and political life of Upper Canada.
