Prior to the invention and spread of photography, the early tourist's desire to own a souvenir of such a work as Reni's fresco, was satisfied by the copyist. Consequently, more portable versions of the original work, such as this one, were created by artists who specialized in duplicating the work of other artists down to the finest detail.
It was a surprise to learn that this is not the only 19th century copy of this fresco in Ontario. In 1999, another ornately framed version came to light, reputedly having been purchased by a relative of the owner, also in the 1850s. That two such copies of the same work exist in the province today is certainly a most unlikely coincidence.
