| By the early 1960s the parade had grown so much that when
it came time for the final preparations a staff of over 100 store
employees was necessary. This included carpenters, artists, costumers,
drivers, painters and executives.
Plus, there were hundreds of volunteer marchers and a score of
police and other officials who contributed to putting the parade
on the road.
The parade was over a kilometre and a half in length and travelled
about 10 kilometres along the route. It took about one and a half
hours from start to finish and about thirty-five minutes to pass
any one point.
The theme for 1961 was 'The Dreams and Delights of Childhood'
and the cover of that year's colouring book can be seen to the
right. To see all of the pages of the colouring book and download

"I am 50+ years old
now, but Eaton's meant a lot to me growing up, I had my
own Punkinhead Doll which I wish that my Granddaughters
could have as he was so unique. The Santa Claus Parade I
watched every year on Television (after we got a television) .
I saw my first live Parade in 1962. My cousin who lived
in Toronto, invited my Brother, Sister and I to come and
visit her and to go to the Santa Claus Parade. It was great
and afterwards, we got to go and view the windows of Eaton's
store and then visit Eaton's Toyland and Santa. These memories
have stayed with me throughout the years."

"The
Santa Claus Parade was the start of the Christmas season
in our family. We always made one trip downtown with our
mother to see the Christmas windows and to visit Santa.
This was another big adventure because it meant a trip on
the subway. I'm sure this is how I learned the order of
the stations so thoroughly that I can recite them to anyone,
anytime in spite of the fact that I left Toronto nearly
20 years ago."

The theme for the 1966 parade was, 'Santa's
Carousel of Colour' and all the floats reflected that
theme. And, keeping up with tradition, characters from popular
nursery rhymes were featured prominently. |

1969 was Eaton's 100th Anniversary year and
the 65th running of the parade was held on November 15th. By this
time it was being seen by 500,000 people in person and many more
all across Canada were watching it on television. It was also
being broadcast in the United States at a later date.
Eaton's held a design competition for children to design a birthday
float. The competition was won by 12 year old Ricky Evans of Weston
Ontario and he rode on the float in the parade.
Make a slide show with the images below. There is video footage
to come.

"I
grew up in the late 60's - early 70's in Toronto and fondly
remember the Eaton's Santa Claus parade. I always watched
it on T. V. with a mug of hot chocolate in my hand and a
blanket wrapped around me. Just watching everyone battle
the elements made me bundle up even though I was in the
warmth of my own living room.
Wishing all a wonderful Christmas."

Over the years, the parade organizers kept up with the times
by including characters from contemporary comics and television
shows. But characters from traditional nursery rhymes and fairy
tales continued to play an integral role.
The floats representing the story of Jack and the Beanstalk
from two different eras are shown here. The photograph to the
is from 1925 and the one below was taken 49 years later at the
1974 running of the parade.

| For the 1977 running of the parade, the lead float
was "Travelling to Toyland." A Charity Dream Auction had
been held before the parade and the winner, wearing a white dress
with silver wings, played a Christmas Fairy and got to ride beside
Punkinhead. |

| By the end of the
seventies, Eaton's connection with the parade was coming to a
close. While the parade has continued to run every year, 1981
would be the last year that the department store would host it. |
