| By the early 20's the parade had grown to seven
floats that assembled at the Eaton warehouse near Lansdowne Avenue.
The floats were stored there throughout the year and each year
the floats were updated and often new ones were added to the 'fleet'. |

Familiar stories and popular characters were always called
upon for the floats. The story of Noah's Ark is represented by
the horse-drawn float to the right, while the floats below show
Peter Pan and the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

| As use of gasoline engines became more widespread,
Santa Claus sometimes switched to more modern means of transportation.
Throughout the 20s and early 30s he arrived aboard motorized floats
of various kinds. In 1925, he was the engineer of his own steam
locomotive, the Santa Claus Express. |

| The earliest film footage of the parade in the Archives'
collection is from 1927. There is a clip containing excerpts of
that parade to the left below. The parade was already getting fairly
long and many of the nursery-rhyme characters like Mother Goose
and Jack in the Beanstalk can be seen. Many of these characters
were parade regulars and continued to be updated and changed year
after year. Also represented in the clips is the well-known cartoon
family of the time, Andy Gump and Min, and their son Chester. |

While there are many similarities between the
1927 and 1928 parades, it's interesting to compare the differences.
Some of the floats seem much more substantial in 1928 and Mother
Goose's goose has grown considerably.

| Although the majority of floats continued to be identified
with the best-known nursery rhymes and fairy tales, as time went
on, popular comic strip characters of the day also began to play
a part in the parade.
Felix the Cat was one of the first contemporary children's characters
to take part, but over the years popular characters like Bugs
Bunny, Popeye, and characters from Sesame Street also got into
the act.

| Over the early years of the parade Santa had used
every conceivable mode of transportation. But in 1930 he ‘came
to town’ on a more conventional style of float – a sleigh
and eight reindeer leaping over the housetops. By 1935 this had
become his trademark and that's how he's travelled ever since. |

| “As a child, I lived at
Ossington and Dupont area and the Santa Claus Parade passed
by my aunt's front room window. I was one of the lucky ones
who did not freeze to watch the highlights of the Xmas season.
Shortly after, we would go to Eatons and Simpsons to see the
magic of their windows. I can still remember the smell of
Eatons, as we made out way to see Santa. Up the wooden escalator,
or up the crowded elevator with the operator calling out the
floors and what we could expect on the floors.” |
