Title Banner - An Introduction to Archival Records at the Archives of Ontario

Architectural records are among the most beautiful items at the Archives. They are valued highly for their artistic qualities, but also for their ability to inform us about the buildings where we live, work, study and play.

Perspective drawings, plans and sectional views through buildings have an enduring appeal because they are the evidence of an architect’s vision and creativity.

While real buildings are often altered, or else disappear completely from the scene, the architect’s original conception remains untouched by time or circumstances in the drawings.

Architectural records can help us to learn about the vital role that buildings play in documenting our social history.

The dreams and aspirations of clients are often revealed in the design choices made by the architect. A building that is traditional, substantial and looks durable is indicative of serious aims and high purpose.

A careful study of designs for other contemporary buildings will also reveal if the architect was following established trends or if the client desired something more innovative.
