Krystyna Sadowska
was born in Lublin, Poland in 1912 and died in
1994. She lived in Brazil and in England
before emigrating to Canada in 1949. She studied at the Warsaw
Academy of Fine Arts, at the Central School of
Arts and Crafts, London, England and at the Académie
de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. Sadowska was a
member of the Ontario Society of Artists and
had many international affiliations. She earned her reputation
in tapestry (for which she was awarded a gold medal
by the French government in 1937), ceramic, painting,
batik and later, metal sculpture. Recipient of the coveted Jurzykowski
Award (New York) for overall artistic activity, the artist
has executed a large number of commissions in Canada
and the U.S.A.
The artist’s use of bronze in this piece is unique as she
has exploited the metal’s texture rather than its natural
patina. The marble environment may have inspired the fossil-like
articulation of the surface of her relief panel, which was achieved
with a welding torch.
