In 1844, Egerton Ryerson who had spent his early career as an itinerant Methodist minister and editor of the Christian Guardian, was appointed as Canada West's Superintendent of Education. One of his first major initiatives was to enable legislation for the establishment of a Normal School for teacher education. A permanent home for the School was opened in Toronto in 1852.
