Egerton Ryerson's travels to Europe in 1855 and 56 included a stop in Rome. There, he purchased a number of paintings, including L'Aurora, a work attributed to Augusto Ratti based on Guido Reni's 17th century ceiling fresco in the Casino Rospigliosa. This work shows the sun god, Apollo, in his chariot led by Aurora, goddess of the Dawn.
