Thomas and J. R. Connon, a Photographic Legacy: Portraiture
 

Like most photography studios at the time, a mainstay of the Connon business was portraiture and there are many portraits in the Connon collection.

The vast majority of the surviving Connon portraits are either lantern slides or glass plate negatives like the one to the left below. There are also a handful of tintypes in the collection. The photograph of two women below right is one example.

Connon Glass Plate Negative Slide Show

Lantern slides were also becoming popular at the time and there are nearly 90 of them in the Connon collection, many of them portraits.

They would be projected using a lantern projector, or "magic lantern" like the one in the image to the right.

John also experimented with hand tinting the slides as seen in the one portrait below and elsewhere in this exhibit.
