M. O. Hammond, Photographer: Travel Albums - Maritimes - Page Banner

In August 1907, Hammond travelled to the Maritime provinces on a working holiday with his friend and fellow journalist, Newton McTavish and Newton’s brother John.

Together they visited most of the major centres in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to meet with local officials and photograph the local scenery.

Hammond was quite taken with the natural beauty and wealth of historic sites and was particularly enamoured with the beauty of Grand Pre, the early Acadian settlement in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley region.

“we toiled up a long and winding road with pleasant houses and farms on either hand, and at last reached the bank. The view which burst all at once on us was, I think (the) finest in my experiences of rural landscapes…the scene was so bewitching that we all burst into rapturous expressions which us men are rarely given to indulge. We lay and gazed for several minutes and then we did the inevitable, we each took a picture of it.”

Hammond returned to the Maritimes several times on assignment with the Globe and on vacation with Clara in 1922.

He and Clara visited many of the same places he had visited and photographed on earlier trips.
