In his early years as a Globe reporter, Hammond travelled extensively throughout Ontario on various assignments. Whether he was preparing the annual crop reports, covering political campaigns and events, or any other local events of interest to the Globe, he always brought along his camera to capture the local scenery and people.

In later years, Hammond travelled less for work and more for pleasure – visiting various historical sites with his friend, the noted Canadian artist C. W. Jefferys, to photograph battlefields, ruins and buildings.

Every summer, Hammond, Clara and the children visited family and friends in the Port Dover area where they played on the beach and made occasional jaunts to some of the battle sites, forts and monuments in the Niagara region.
