M. O. Hammond, Photographer: Travel Albums - Quebec Page Banner

Of all of the places in Canada that Hammond visited, he returned to Quebec more than any other.

With his wife Clara, he made many trips by steamer from Toronto, through Lake Ontario and up the St. Lawrence River, stopping in Kingston, Montreal, Quebec City, travelling to many towns and villages along the way.

M. O. Hammond first met the renowned Quebec artist Horatio Walker in 1909 at a photography session with the Canadian Art Club. Hammond and Walker shared similar interests in art, and had a mutual friend in the poet and bureaucrat Duncan Campbell Scott.

In the summer of 1915, the Hammonds were invited to stay at Walker’s home, St. Petronille, on Ile d’Orléans in Quebec and they returned nearly every summer thereafter. Hammond’s photographs include many images of Walker at work, around his home, or posing for the camera.

“Closed our visit to Quebec with a bang-up day with Horatio Walker at St. Petronille, Ile d’Orleans…Walker met us at dock with his carriage and much gracious hospitality, we soon sped round the curved road, right by the river to his home on the east bank. His home is on the spot on which Jacques Cartier camped in 1536. His new house is spacious and elegant, simple in lay-out and rich in finish.”

St. Petronille was a perfect location from which to explore and photograph the many historic sites, Québecois habitat and the Québec countryside.

“We spent an easy lazy day. We were in the studio for a while and talked of photos, paintings, etc. and I then got busy with my camera. Took one through a window with Miss Pretty in foreground and hollyhocks beyond. To facilitate, Mr. W(alker) took out the screens himself.”
