Hammond was a regular
visitor to the United States. In 1904, he and Clara attended the
World's Fair in St. Louis. He was already a fairly accomplished
photographer and was interested in seeing the latest photographs
from the U.S. and abroad, and trying his hand at some artistic
compositions with his new camera.

“The
photos from England were numerous and many of them beautiful.
They were usually impressionistic, and on gum bichromate
paper and enlargements. I paid special attention to several
harbor views with fishing boats, and to one including two
of the pyramids.”

Hammond returned to the U.S. on many
occasions, covering U.S. election campaigns, meeting with book
publishers, and seeking out the latest images for the annual Christmas
edition of the Globe.
He also used these opportunities to visit local markets, bookstores,
and to see the latest works in the art and photography galleries.
As usual, he brought along his camera and took many snapshots
of local scenery, people and buildings.

“we
headed for the Capitol Hill to take photos and see the building.
When taking the second picture on the east side a guard
came and warned me that we were not supposed to take pictures
there but to hurry and snap it and get away! Well, of all
the petty tyrannies in a land of liberty! Of course I snapped
it and we went on inside.”
