M. O. Hammond, Photographer: Travel Albums - Western Canada - Page Banner

The changing political landscape in western Canada in the early 1900s provided many opportunities for Hammond to travel to Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia on assignment with the Globe.

One of his most notable western trips was to Alberta in 1909 to cover the Federal Government’s initiative to relocate buffalo herds from Lamont to Wainwright Alberta.

During his time in the west he took over 300 photos and bought or otherwise received about 100 more. While there, he wrote 5 or 6 letters for the Globe entitled “the West from a Car Window”.

Hammond travelled with the cowboys and others involved in the relocation, including the well-known American artist Charlie Russell who specialized in painting western scenes.

“The star performer was Charlie Russell, the ex-cowboy and present artist of Western life. He is fire and voluble, constantly talking and full of stories. These are the greatest collection of wit combined with vulgarity I ever heard.”

The trip also provided him with an opportunity to visit and photograph some of the immigrant settlements in the surrounding areas.
