| Hammond travelled extensively
throughout Canada and the United States, usually on assignment with
the Globe, but also vacationing with friends and family, or doing
research for one of his many projects.
He rarely travelled without his camera and wherever he went,
he made a point of seeking out the local historic sites and monuments
and capturing the flavour of a particular place through his photography.
Local markets, people and street scenes were recurring themes.
Hammond compiled selected photographs from his travels into a
series of albums, with the images carefully annotated in his own
hand. He kept his albums by region – western travel, the
maritimes, etc, and the images arranged chronologically. 34 of
these albums have survived and are in the Archives of Ontario’s
collection.
