Few industries have played a more significant role in Ontario's history than the manufacture of paper. For nearly two hundred years the industry has been vital and influential in the growth and development of the province both economically and geographically.
It all began in 1826 with a competition, run by the provincial government, offering a financial prize to the first person to establish a paper mill in what was then known as Upper Canada. Since that time the pulp and paper industry has been one of the province's biggest employers and greatest revenue generators. Its impact on Ontario's economy and overall development has been substantial, particularly in the north.
This virtual exhibit explores the history of papermaking in the Province of Ontario. |
