Stories from Ontario's Movie Theatres: Capitol Theatre, Brockville - Page Banner

The Capitol Theatre in Brockville opened in the mid-1930s, and was operated by Paramount Theatres Ltd. The theatre was completely renovated and upgraded in 1948. It closed in the mid-1980s.

An April 2, 1942, letter to the Chief Inspector from J. A. Mabee illustrates one of the effects that WWII had on theatres. Mr. Mabee states that......

“J. R. McLennan, Manager of the Capitol Theatre, Brockville, Ontario, has notified my wife who is a shareholder of this theatre, that new steel exit doors and steel frames must be installed. He claims that this order originated from your travelling inspector. These exits lead to a through street and I understand they are in working order but in need of repairs. Would it not be satisfactory to have the present doors repaired so that they would last for the duration and comply with the Dominion Government’s request to save all steel for the war effort”

RG 56-9-0-9-2

The Chief Inspector agreed.
