Stories from Ontario's Movie Theatres: Capitol Theatre, Larder Lake - Page Banner

The Capitol Theatre in Larder Lake opened in 1938 and was the first theatre in the area. Like many others, it was owned and operated by the Theatre Holding Corporation Ltd. of Toronto, and Kirkland Amusements Ltd.

From the 1940s well into the 1960s the janitor lived in the basement, under the stage.

The continuing existence of this theatre was always considered tenuous. On March 17, 1962, the owners wrote to the Theatres Branch asking permission to remove some seats in order to allow dancing. They felt that....

“the teen-ages in Larder Lake haven’t got an available hall for an occasional ‘Teen’ dance, and there is a possibility that if we book a local band, which specializes in Rock and Roll and the Twist it would subsidize the losses being felt in this location”

Permission was denied, on the grounds that the theatre’s license didn’t cover live entertainment.

The theatre finally closed in 1980, and the building was sold.
