| The Archives publiques
de l'Ontario has a reference library available for use by
researchers in conjunction with the archival documents.
It holds a number of different types of published items
not easily available in other libraries, which researchers
on aboriginal history will find useful, if not essential,
in interpreting the documents.
Greater detail here is given on four of the Library's
separately numbered collections:
- Pamphlets
- Ontario government publications
- Government of Canada (Parks Canada) reports
- Books (monographs).
These are all accessible through the Library Card Catalogue
in the Reading Room.
Useful standard reference books and periodicals on Ontario
and Canadian history and culture are also available: they
are not detailed here.
292. Pamphlets.
CONTENT.
The Archives has an extensive collection of pamphlets, many
of them quite rare. Most items are Ontario-related but there
are other works on Canada and North America. Some pamphlets,
however, are simply reprints from journals -- of history
or archaeology, for example -- which can be found elsewhere.
Sample pamphlets, include the following:
Pamph. 1853 No. 18
JACOBS, Rev. Peter. Journal of the Reverend Peter Jacobs,
Indian Wesleyan Missionary, from Rice Lake to the Hudson's
Bay Territory and returning, commencing May 1852, with a
brief account of his life. Toronto: Anson Green, 1853.
An Ojibwa (Mississauga) Indian from a Reserve
near Peterborough, the Reverend Jacobs was active in the
Indian missions for many years.
Pamph. 1902 No. 52
PRINCE, J. Dyneley. A Modern Delaware Tale. Reprinted
from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society,
Vol. XLI, No. 168, 1902.
A "witchcraft tale", printed simultaneously
in Lenâpe and English as written by Chief Nelles Montour
of Hagersville, Ontario.
Pamph. 1934 No. 69
MAJOR, Frederick W., comp. Manitoulin, The Isle of the
Ottawas: a Handbook of Historical and Other Information
on the Grand Manitoulin Island. Gore Bay, Ontario: Recorder
Press, 1934.
An old but still valuable compilation of miscellaneous
facts on a centre of aboriginal society in Northern Ontario.
Pamph. 1893 No.36
JONES, Rev. Arthur E., ed. The Aulneau Collection 1734-1745.
Rare or Unpublished Documents Series II, Archives of St.
Mary's College. Montreal, 1893.
Letters, collected from descendants in France
in the late Nineteenth Century, mainly concerning Father
Jean Pierre Aulneau (1705-1734) who was killed by the Sioux
Indians at Lake of the Woods. Other letters deal with the
Hurons of Québec, and peoples in South America.

Pamphlets received by the Archives publiques de l'Ontario
before 1975 were indexed in the Pamphlet Card Catalogue
in the Reading Room. Since 1976, they have been indexed
along with other published material in the Library Card
Catalogue; both provide quick entry to this material. Researchers
should check 1) the many entries under "Indians",
as well as 2) the names of a particular group or 3) geographical
location. For example "Indian Missions", "Delaware
Indians", "Manitoulin Island" and the names
of historians specializing in aboriginal research.
