From 1984 until his mandatory retirement at age 65 in 1989, Daniel G.Hill III served as the third Ombudsman for the Province of Ontario.
The role of the Ombudsman is to advocate on behalf of citizens who feel that they have been mistreated by their government, and Daniel Hill brought the same passion to the job that he had brought, two decades earlier, to the Ontario Human Rights Commission.

“To me, an Ombudsman’s office is the incarnation of human rights. I really believe this is a human rights agency. This is a different kind of concept than before when the office was more legalistic. To me, this is the court of last appeal about injustice-and injustice is about human rights.”

Daniel Hill was proud of his achievements as Ombudsman of Ontario. Among his chief accomplishments, he:
- reorganized the office
- set up field offices around Ontario to make his services more widely accessible
- lobbied on behalf of ordinary Ontarians who had been embezzled in an investment scam
- argued that the Ombudsman’s office needed more jurisdiction and authority in order to investigate and advocate properly on behalf of Ontarians who had been wronged or insufficiently protected by their government.
The document to the right outlines Hill's initiatives as Ombudsman.
