What better way to celebrate the 2015 Pan / Parapan American Games in Toronto than to showcase the records of a Toronto athlete who experienced the Games firsthand? Jackie MacDonald was a trail blazer for amateur sport in Canada, and was instrumental in challenging conventional views of female athletes. The Archives of Ontario is fortunate to showcase her scrapbooks (reference code F 4662), which document her prolific athletic career from 1947 to 1958, including her participation in the discus throw at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico City.
Jackie also represented Canada in shot put and discus at the 1954 and 1958 British Empire Commonwealth Games, the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, and the 1957 World Youth Games in Moscow. She held the Canadian women's shot put record for ten years straight, from 1953 to 1963.
Her scrapbooks share a tale of determination, adventure, camaraderie, and passion. Share in this passion during the Year of Sport by visiting this exhibit, on now until the end of August 2015 in the Archives of Ontario’s lobby.
