William Hamilton Merritt

Businessman, politician and militia officer during the War of 1812, Merritt served in the Provincial Dragoons and was captured by the Americans at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane. After the war he was the leading figure in the development of the Welland Canal, along with numerous other development projects.
