Join us for Archives Awareness Week 2016!  From April 4 -April 9, we will be celebrating archives’ unique potential to inspire and excite people, bring communities together, and tell memorable stories about the past. 

This year’s focus is all about our customers and how they have used our collections in creative and innovative ways. Come to the Archives of Ontario all week long to enjoy our Customer Appreciation Week, learn about our amazing collections and services, and meet the people they’ve inspired.

Archives Awareness Week 2016 Events

Customer Appreciation Week
Date: Monday, April 4 to Saturday, April 9
Location: First Floor, Archives of Ontario, 134 Ian Macdonald Blvd., Toronto

Our week-long customer appreciation event, where we will be showing our gratitude to Archives of Ontario researchers with free giveaways at our Reception Desk.

Archives of Ontario Tour
Date & Time: Wednesday, April 6, 1:00 - 1:45 p.m.
Location: Meet in George Spragge Classroom, Archives of Ontario, 134 Ian Macdonald Blvd., Toronto

Explore one of the most cutting-edge archival facilities in Canada! This tour of the Archives of Ontario’s building includes an introduction to our public areas, including our award-winning First World War exhibit and our Reading Room. You’ll also see our behind-the-scenes spaces, including our state-of-the-art Preservation Services Lab and records storage vaults.

Out of the Box! Speakers Event
Date & Time: Wednesday, April 6, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Location: George Spragge Classroom, Archives of Ontario, 134 Ian Macdonald Blvd., Toronto

You see the open boxes of archival records and the researchers diligently working their way through the records. Have you ever wondered why they are at the Archives and what they are working on? Three speakers will talk about how they are using the Archives’ collections.  

Time Event Details

2:00 p.m.

Dr. Jay Young, Outreach Officer, Archives of Ontario will give a sneak-peek into the Archives’ upcoming Canada 150 exhibit and discuss how he used archival records in curating this new exhibit. 

3:00 p.m.

Jennifer Harrington, Curator and Wendy Rowney, Assistant General Manager will discuss using the Archives of Ontario’s collections to develop a new interpretative plan for Black Creek Pioneer Village. Recent research in museums has shown much interest in the stories of everyday people from the past. From public programs to exhibits to dramatic performance, Wendy Rowney and Jennifer Harrington will show how Black Creek is using archival materials to engage the public with our history. 

4:00 p.m.

Steve Paikin, Host of TV Ontario’s popular The Agenda, will be talking about how he used the Archives’ records, including recently donated private records, to write his upcoming biography of former Premier Bill Davis.
